Getting the Best Value on a Monitor.
A computer monitor, or simply a monitor, is the screen on which you view things from your computer. As you are reading this, you’re probably reading it on a monitor - either on your laptop, your desktop, or even a mobile phone or PDA. In any case, the monitor has a very important job. A good monitor should see you through several computer upgrades, so it is important to choose a good one.
There are several types of monitor - cathode ray tube (or CRT) and Liquid Crystal Display (or LCD).
CRT.
CRT monitors work by an electron gun shooting electrons down the CRT to the screen, where the electrons cause the phosphor coating lining the screen to glow. On the coating there are dots, one of each colour (red, green and yellow) - each dot is called a pixel.
CRT monitors are large and bulky but cheap. They generally need slightly more room than their screen size, so a 17" monitor will need 18-19 inches deep (size is measured diagonally).
They are not as common these days, with the more advanced LCD monitors becoming the choice for people updating their systems.
LCD.
LCD works by blocking light - specifically, they are made of two pieces of polarised glass, with a liquid crystal material between them. A light is passed through the first piece of glass, and at the same time, electrical currents cause the molecules of liquid crystal to align, allowing varying levels of light to pass through to the second substrate, creating the colours and images that you see.
Thin Film Transistor LCD (or TFT-LCD) is a type of LCD that works by arranging tiny transistors and capacitors in a matrix on the glass of the display. To turn on particular pixel, the proper row is switched on, and then a charge is sent down the correct column. Since all of the other rows that the column intersects are turned off, only the capacitor at the designated pixel receives a charge. The capacitor is able to hold the charge until the next refresh cycle.
Generally speaking, no matter how big a screen on a LCD monitor, they are usually only an inch or two deep. However, the angle at which the monitor is positioned can make it difficult to view due to fading.
Other things to consider are:
· The refresh rate, as it can help reduce eye strain - at least 60 Hz is recommended, 75Hz is ideal. This does not apply to LCD screens, as they turn each pixel off individually.
· Resolution is the amount of pixels on a screen, and together with refresh rate they decide picture quality. See what the highest resolution is at 85Hz to give you an idea of how good the picture will be. Something to note is that when resolution increases, the writing on a screen will decrease. LCD monitors only display well at the resolution at which they were designed - this is called the native resolution.
· Dot pitch is the distance between adjacent pixels - around 0.26 for a 17" monitor is good.
· Controlling the picture quality is essential - check to see how easy they are to use, so you know how to adjust contrast, brightness and alignment.
· Warranty - how long is it and do they offer an extended warranty?
· "Dead Pixel Policy" - what do they allow for? Look carefully before you decide to buy a monitor. You don’t want to be stuck with a monitor full of dead pixels that disturb your viewing on the monitor.
Knowing what you want is only half the battle of getting a good bargain on a monitor - knowing what’s what so you can go in well-armed with knowledge is the other half.

Flat Panel Computer Monitors Offer Many Benefits to Consumers
Flat panel computer monitors are all the rage these days. We live in an overcrowded world and anything that saves space is a great thing. In fact, many of the newer computer desks are set up to take these monitors into consideration. It won’t be long before the flat panel computer monitors are the standard.
In the meantime, those of us with the clunky old huge monitors can look at those with the sleeker slimmer flat panel computer monitors with envy. If you haven’t seen one you should really check them out. They come in many sizes and with many different price ranges. Depending on what you use your computer for, you may find that you can do quite well with one of the lower end flat panel computer monitors. If you use a lot of high-end graphics intensive functions on your computer you will want one of the better quality (and more expensive flat panel computer monitors).
These flat panel monitors not only save space, but they are much more environmentally friendly. Less parts to get rid of once they need replacing, this means they take up less space in landfills. They consume less energy and they have fewer emissions than traditional CRT monitors. These small favors add up when you consider how many households worldwide own computers.
Not only are these monitors more environmentally friendly, they are also work place friendly. They are easier on the eyes of workers and free up desk space to allow for more productivity in smaller spaces. With larger companies paying a premium for office space every little thing that results in needing less space is a good thing for overhead expenses, not to mention anything that can increase productivity.

Used Computers are by far the cheapest solution
Cheap computers are everywhere. Dell is offering some stupidly priced computer hardware at the moment, all with a view to beating the online shopping market. The point is, this isn't really conducive with an ethical, environmentally friendly solution and is simply keeping Dell gainfully employed.
Low cost computers can also mean second hand and there's a few good reasons to buying used.
1) The processing power of a used computer may not be much less than that currently on offer by the Manufacturer
2) You don't need the latest and fastest computer to produce a spreadsheet, surf the web, write emails and write letters.
3) A used computer has been road-tested. It's not going to fail on you any time soon.
There's other reasons to get a used computer, but basically, that second hand unit you've been looking at will probably do most of the things you need your IT hardware to fulfill. Even the monitor doesn't have to be new. You may think that a brand new flat screen TFT is best with lower energy consumption and a small footprint, leaving loads of desk space. A flast screen monitor may be a great solution for some, but a used CRT screen is better for gaming, graphic design and photography. They're a proven and refined technology. They offer multisync solutions, allowing you to change resolutions and refresh rates on the fly, with every resolution being native (TFTs have one native refresh rate and the rest are emulated).
A CRT is pretty much as good as a TFT when it comes to energy efficiency. There's only a few watts in it and as long as you turn everything off at the mains once done each day, you won't see a marked increase in your electrical bill. A naturally flat CRT screen will give you the added benefit of super fast refresh rates and be able to keep up with the latest games on the market- all at a very low cost.
Cheap used laptops do however have some downsides. These include the battery life and general wear and tear of the unit from it's previous owner. Saying all that, as long as it's been relatively well looked after, it'll give you a great solution for emails and writing on the move. Not only that, but if it's stolen, you won't have lost as much money.
