Windows Vista - Which Version Do You Need?

After deciding to shift to a Windows Vista OS, you need to decide on which Windows Vista version you should pick. Before you consider shelling out $400 for a Windows Vista Ultimate license, you really should ask yourself exactly what features you need and want so you can decide whether the price is right. Windows Vista Home Basic This is the most rudimentary version of Vista available. It has the more secure IE 7, the firewall, the quick search functionality, and easier connectivity. When it comes to the features that distinguish Vista from previous versions of the Windows OS, though, Home Basic is somewhat lacking, though it does offer parental control. Windows Vista Home Basic is a good choice only if you use your computer solely for web surfing and basic document processing, or if your computer is just barely powerful enough to run Windows Vista. Windows Vista Home Premium For an extra $40, you can get much more out of Windows Vista. Aside from including all the features of the Home Basic version, Home Premium offers all of the window-dressing that makes Vista look like Vista. You will have pre-packaged games and Aero interface capability. Aero gives your windows and icons a 3D appearance and smoother transitions, as well as allowing you to add transparency effects to window borders. Home Premium offers tablet PC functionality, document collaboration, and scheduled backups. Home Premium also offers the fully integrated Windows Media Center for all your home entertainment needs, plus a moviemaker which is HD format-capable. Windows Vista Home Premium is designed for the user who uses the computer for PC and network gaming, since Premium supports DirectX 10, with its advanced graphics technologies incredible graphics rendering. Premium is also designed for watching High Definition movie, editing/making video clips, burning DVD copies, and interfacing with the Xbox 360, which Home Premium edition automatically detects to allow for Video, Audio, and Picture sharing. Windows Vista Business Windows Vista Business drops Parental controls, Media Center features, and pre-installed games for obvious reasons. Vista Business does have the rest of the Home Premium features plus support for business applications and business data security (fax, remote desktop connectivity, file encryption, and complete shadow incremental backup). This version of Windows Vista is, as the name implies, strictly for business purposes. Windows Vista Enterprise Windows Vista Enterprise adds Microsoft’s BitLocker encryption technology to the feature set found in Windows Vista Business, but this version of Windows is only offered to businesses participating in Microsoft’s Software Assurance program. Windows Vista Ultimate This edition has everything that is included in the Home Premium and Business editions. Vista Ultimate also adds Enterprise’s BitLocker encryption technology for the computer’s hard drives, protecting the drives so that only authorized users can boot up the OS or view the files contained in the drives. Because of its full complement of features, Vista Ultimate is perfect for people who use the PC for fun and business in equal parts, as well as users who want to be protected from data loss and PC theft. Not so long ago, the bulky video cassettes that were the only means of distributing films to the home viewer. Audio cassettes are still around but with the arrival of CD and DVD, and their superior digital quality output, the audio and video industries too have witnessed a revolution. In the next step, stamper is injection moulded to create a compact disc. The disc is then coated with a thin layer of aluminum as a means of protection from any sort of damage. At the end of this, appropriate images and the company logo are imprinted onto the disc. Nowadays a lot of stress is put on the importance of eye-catching packaging. CD and DVD replication might be a little expensive but its worthwhile if you wish to have quality and professional copies in large volumes say 100,000 to 1 million copies.

Keyboard Power: Using Your Computer Even If Your Mouse “Dies”

There are various accessories that could help operating a computer easier. The mouse is just an example of an accessory which makes navigation simple with just one click. However, most of these accessories have short “lifespan” and can be considered disposable. This is when the accessories can become bothersome. What are you to do, when in the middle of an important document, your mouse decides to “die”? Would you worry? Would you panic and run to the nearest store? What if it’s night time and the stores are closed and you are rushing up your work? On your keyboard, immediately press CTRL + S simultaneously to save whatever it is you’re doing. That way, you don’t lose your work. This is a common and one of the most familiar tasks without using the mouse. If the mouse is not functioning and you need to do something important but you don’t have the time to repair the mouse or change it, you can actually still do your work even with just the keyboard around. Here are some key combinations you need to navigate your way through your PC sans the mouse: Ctrl + O – to open a file or document Ctrl + B – to use the “Bold” feature of fonts Ctrl + I – to italize fonts Ctrl + U – to underline texts in a document Ctrl + X – to cut texts, cells, or icons from files Ctrl + W – to close existing windows Ctrl + R – to align document to the right Ctrl + L – to align document to the left Ctrl + E – to align document to the center (especially in Word Documents) Ctrl + Z – to undo last action done in a document Ctrl + Y – to redo last action done in a document Shift F7 – to prompt the Thesaurus tool in a document F7 – to prompt the spelling and grammar check tool in a document F12 – or save as, to save same document with another filename or to another drive Windows + D - shows desktop Alt + Tab – switches you from one window to another F5 – refreshes your browser when it seems to have stopped moving (when you are using the Internet) Ctrl + Esc – prompts the “Start Menu” when you are using the old 101-key keyboard without the Windows keys on it. F6 – enables you to change the URL on the address field when you are using the Internet. Shift + Tab – when you need to go back to a previous cell (in a spreadsheet) or entry in a form (in the Internet) Ctrl + V or Shift + Insert – to paste copied text to another document Windows + F – when you need to find and open a file recently saved Windows + Pause/Break – to directly open and view your system properties without going through the control panel windows Windows + E – to directly open and view Windows Explorer without going though the Start Menu Alt + F4 – to prompt shut down menu When you get used to using these shortcuts, you will certainly be able to finish the task you are doing even without the mouse. Keep Your Notebook Compuer Longer! A Safety and Care Guide for Laptop Computers

Laptop computers - also known as notebook computers - have become an important part of our lives. They are more affordable than ever and as popular as cell phones. A laptop computer has a versatility that the home PC does not provide. With its smaller size it is portable and easier to carry along. This makes it convenient to use in many situations. You can take it to work and back home as well as take it on more extensive travel. Laptop computers are not just for older working people anymore. Because of its ease of use, more young people are using them for school and college. They can access the Internet almost anywhere and provide updates for work, research, and even games. Taking Care of Your Laptop or Notebook Computer It is important to take care of your laptop computer and protect it from accidents. They are designed for heavy use but common sense will tell you that you need to be prudent in your treatment. One of the first recommendations is to buy a case designed for a notebook computer. These are made with padding to protect your laptop computer from wear and tear and protection in case you drop it. It is not good to carry your notebook computer unprotected or in a purse or backpack. You can easily find a case by shopping online where you will find 1000s of products to choose from. Another important tip for laptop computer care is to keep food and drinks away from it. Even a small amount of liquid is enough to ruin the delicate components in the laptop computer. It means almost certain replacement, and most warranties will not cover it. It is not worth the risk to lose all your data. Protect Your Notebook Computer When using your laptop computer you should always use a surge protector. An electrical surge may not hurt it one time, but continued surges could destroy it. If you are using a cable or dial-up modem during a storm, be sure to unplug it. Lightening can travel through phone lines and ruin the laptop computer. You should not leave your notebook computer in a cold environment. This can cause condensation when you return it to a warm area and could cause the circuitry to short it out. If it has been in the cold, let it warm up before turning it on. When traveling with your laptop computer, be sure to charge all your batteries before you leave. You might not know when you will be able to charge them again. On a long trip, take extra batteries to avoid this problem. By shopping online, you can find the supplies you need as well as other products such as iPods, jewelry, games, toys, sporting goods, pet supplies and cell phones - even free gifts. Do not leave your notebook computer unattended and do not check it as baggage when flying. Keep it in your hands at all times to avoid the possibility of theft. Don't try to disassemble or repair your laptop computer; this is a job for professionals. You may inadvertently cause more damage by your lack of knowledge. Shopping Online When you are ready to buy a laptop computer, cell phone, iPod, or other electronics, shopping online will provide everything you need.

Keep Others In The Dark - Delete Your Recent Documents

Your computer records all the files that you open and stores them depending on your settings; most of the time Windows stores up to 15 recently opened documents. Your computer does this to allow you to have easy access to the files that you may need to open again and again. This is a great feature because of its convenience, but it can also be burdensome when you are using a shared computer and you want to keep your recent documents private. There are ways to delete recent documents. You can do this manually or you can use some software programs that can do the job for you. In any case, it is oftentimes necessary for you to know how to delete recent documents be it manually or with help. This step is crucial if you want to maintain privacy and your file safety. Deleting recent documents is easier than it may seem. It only takes a few basic steps. As stated, the recent documents folder usually contains 15 of the most recent documents that you have opened regardless of how long apart as long as they are the latest 15. These could include pictures, videos, text documents, music and other files that you may have opened. To delete your recent document folder, you must first open it, and then you can proceed with the steps of deleting the contents of your Recent Documents Folder. To open the said folder follows these steps: If your recent documents are not yet displayed, do these to help you display them on your computer: With your mouse, Right-Click on the START icon that can be found in the lower left hand corner of your computer screen. After you have done this a pop up window will open. Click PROPERTIES, when you have opened properties pick the Category CUSTOMIZE and click it. After you have done that, click on the Advanced Tab. When you have opened the window for the advanced customization, under the Recent Documents tab, select the option checkbox that states: LIST MY MOST RECENTLY OPENED DOCUMENTS. Click OK and then OK again. Now, you may ask, why do I need to view my recent documents folder when what I want to do is delete it? The answer to that is: You need to see what others are able to see. This way, you are sure that the files you deleted are really scrapped from the recent documents folder. To delete the content of the recent documents folder is as easy as opening it, do the following: Right click on the start icon, click properties. When the properties window is opened click on the Customize tab, then click the advance tab. When you open the advanced tab, under recent documents, you will be able to find a CLEAR LIST option. Click on this and Viola! The files on your Most Recent Documents folder have been deleted. It is important to remember that deleting the documents on this folder does not mean that you are deleting the files from your hard drive. You will still be able to find the documents on the locations that you had saved them. The only difference is that your Recent Documents Folder is now as clean as a whistle.

Karaoke Machines – Features And Fun

There are many different types of karaoke machines on the market today. Whether you are planning a party, or simply want to entertain a few friends, there is a karaoke machine out there to fit your needs. While many people are using computers for this purpose, there are still many advantages to owning an actual karaoke machine. Portability is, perhaps, one of the biggest advantages, as it allows you to transport the machine from one location to another both quickly and easily. It also allows you to set it up in different rooms of the house in order to accommodate the varying number of participating guests. There are several features to look for when deciding to purchase a karaoke machine, many of which are now standard and, are therefore, found on many machines. Still, you should be aware of the features you want, and check to see that the machine you purchase has them. A basic karaoke machine consists of audio input for connecting external electronic audio devices such as tape decks, CD players, and now, MP3 players, a means of altering the pitch of the actual music, (not the pitch of the singer's voice), and an audio output so that others can hear the music and singer. Some lower end machines include a feature which allows you to play a standard song on the machine and suppress the singer's voice so that it isn't heard. This, however, is generally ineffective as it often decreases the quality of the music, and often times distorts the overall sound. This can be especially problematic if the singer is being recorded. At least one microphone input is also included, and many machines come with a mic. Higher end karaoke machines also come equipped with a method for connecting it to another type of machine that will allow video encoding. This will enable the lyrics to be displayed on a screen so that the performer may read them while singing. This feature is typically found in bars and clubs that offer karaoke, but is now commonly done at home as well. While many karaoke machines were equipped with two tape decks, thus allowing singers to record their performances while using karaoke backups already pre-recorded on another cassette, the machines of today typically include one tape deck and a CD player. Recording your performance still isn't a problem, since most backups are now available on CD, which has become standard.

Junk In Your Trunk (computer)

Home Computer Repair Repair - Got Junk In Your Trunk? Unfortunately I'm not talking about someone who has nice "ass-ets," but rather I'm talking about your home computer repair and the unnecessary junk that wastes space therein. I'm talking about spyware, junk that affects your home computer repair by installing programs that slow down your operating system, usually without your knowledge or permission. So what exactly is spyware? Spyware is software components hidden in other software. It's used primarily by companies who aim to advertise their products on your home computer repair. By using spyware, they are able to install their own programs or they attach themselves, like parasites, to Internet Explorer (IE), in hopes that you will click on one of their pop up ads, directing you to their homepage. Sometimes it is even used to report information about you, like what Web sites you are viewing, and then transmitting this information back to their server on the Internet. After this information is transmitted, your home computer repair is targeted with specific pop up ads, linking you to specific products promoted by these larger companies. But I Didn't Download This Right. No one would knowingly download a program that monitors his/her actions like Big Brother. Spyware components are hidden in software that you would download, like free game programs from mainstream companies. Thus, when you install the program, you're also unknowingly installing spyware. Another way people are fooled into downloading spyware are by clicking what they think to be a Window's error message. The message is actually a pop up window containing spyware waiting to be clicked on so it can begin installing itself into your home computer repair. And, in addition to downloading and clicking disguised messages, there's yet two more common ways it can be installed: by visiting maliciously encoded Web pages and in email programs like Microsoft Outlook who use HTML script that can also be maliciously encoded. Prevention Tactics So now that we've discussed what spyware is and how you can get it, let's talk about how to prevent it. The easiest and most simplistic thing you should do is disconnect your modem when it's not in use. This will prevent certain spyware components from enabling your modem to dial long distance numbers. If you have Windows XP, Service Pack 2 should be installed because it patches many of IE's security holes. This program contains a welcome pop up blocker and a new add-on manager that allows you to disable unnecessary programs opened while using IE. IE also has a special security feature that enables you to categorize sites as either Internet, local Intranet, restricted, or trusted. If you categorize the sites you visit, especially sites in the restricted section, IE will prevent the sites from harming your home computer repair. Additionally, Windows also offers firewall protection against malicious sites. Furthermore, whether you have Windows XP or another operating system, there are free programs like Spyware Blaster and Spyware Blocker that can be downloaded to list potentially harmful sites that can be added to your restricted area, while preventing personal information from being transmitted over the Internet. Removal Strategies The first thing you need to do is locate spyware. One way you can do this is by turning your home computer repair on in Safe Mode, then pressing CTRL+ALT+Delete to view the Task Manager. Once you see the Task Manager, click on the "Processes" tab and jot down the programs you see. Then, reboot your home computer repair and press CTRL+ALT+Delete again and write down the programs from the same section. Compare the programs and whatever programs are leftover on the list you made from when you rebooted your home computer repair, aside from anti-viral software, are probably ad-on applications created by spyware. To double check that these programs are caused by spyware, you can visit the Library, to research them. Unfortunately, there's no one program available that will detect and destroy all spyware. Fortunately, there are several free programs that you can download, that when used simultaneously, can be very efficient; programs like Lavasoft's Ad-Aware, Hi Jack This, and Spybot Search & Destroy. And, in case the spyware is difficult to remove, as in the case of a particular program called "Cool Web Search," that takes control of your homepage and then implants Trojans within it, you will have to manually remove it by using CWS Shredder, a specific program designed to shred this particularly difficult spyware. So, if you just remember to disconnect your modem when it's not in use, keep your anti-virus programs current, utilize the Internet's safety features along with your home computer repair system's firewalls, and download or purchase spyware removal programs, your home computer repair should run a lot smoother.

John Reese's Top Traffic Secrets

Track all sources of traffic generation. John Reese stresses the need to track where all traffic comes from and at what cost. It is crucial to know exactly how many sales, newsletter sign-ups, or other leads your particular marketing campaigns generating. This enables you to work smarter and not harder. By tracking all traffic to your site you can make twice as much while working fifty percent less. Content is King On the internet, people are searching for one thing....... Content! Load your website with as much content as possible. Then, continuously add content. Search engines love information and they will love your site if you've got lots of it. There's plenty of free content for the taking on the internet. You can load up your site with articles from article directories like ezinearticles.com. Or, you could be like John and use content from the public domain. Or, you can use content that is in the creative commons. This type is now easier than ever to find now that Yahoo and others have come out with a search engine designed specifically for content that is in the creative commons. An affiliate program is critical to maximum traffic and sales. Lots of internet marketers don't take advantage of this powerful traffic-generating technique. An affiliate program allows you to have your own personal salesman spread all over the web. The best part about it is that there is absolutely no risk involved but tons of traffic and sales to gain. Your website simply cannot grow to its full potential without an effective affiliate program. Banner Ads John Reese advocates the use of banner ads during a time when they are largely an untapped marketing source. Banner ads are one of the most overlooked sources of targeted traffic online. Also, banner ads are now one of the cheapest sources of targeted traffic. In the late 1990's during the dot-com boom, people were selling banner ads for $40 and $50 CPM. Then the dot-com bubble hit and these rates hit the floor. You can now buy banner ads dirt cheap, at $1 to $1.50 CPM. This is $1 for 1,000 banner impressions. The key here is to find the perfect place to advertise that will send targeted, willing to buy customers to your site. Create viral reports that can quickly spread around the internet. This method works best when you have an affiliate program. Allow others to brand your report in order to encourage its distribution. A quality free report can be a powerful promoter when passed around the internet. This same phenomenon can occur when you submit your articles to article directories and popular newsletters. Take advantage of your virtual real estate. Take advantage of the different parts of your website. Don't let any of your web pages go to waste. You can do this by adding a link to another one of your web sites or pages on your thank-you or sales confirmation pages. If you have articles on your site, place links to related articles on the bottom of the page. The longer you keep a visitor at your web site, the more valuable they become. It is very important to funnel traffic from within the multiple sites you may have. Continually seek out other web sites to link to you. Now, we're not just talking about any kind of link here, but powerful, traffic-generating links from respected sites. Here are some quick suggestions: Send a related web site an article that you have written and allow them to display it on their website with a resource box at the end. Offer to exchange articles and tell them about the benefits of doing so. Allow multiple, related web sites to distribute your free e-book or report. All web masters are looking to add value to their web site, why not make it easy for them. There are unlimited possibilities, be creative! Online group participation can produce a no-cost stream of traffic and sales. Get involved in email discussion lists, online groups and forums that are related to your target market. Becoming involved in discussions makes you very credible. Traffic from forums can produce a much higher sales conversion rate. This method can produce quite a bit of sales for you just by helping others out. Not to mention, you'll learn a lot along the way.

IT Support Contracts

IT support covers a wide range of requirements and you might not need all the services offered. You should preferably select a contractor who allows you to tailor the kind of support to your specific needs. One point you should get clarified in particular is the kinds of response you can expect to support requests. Support companies and your expectations can vary widely in this matter. With the above general outline, let us delve into the major specifics of IT support contracts. Typical Terms of an IT Support Contract The contract should be clear about the items supported. EQUIPMENT: An IT setup will typically have servers, PCs, Laptops, Printers and so on. Which specific items will receive support? AGE LIMITATIONS: Are there any clauses that put a limit on the age of the equipment that will be supported? SOFTWARE: You will be using many kinds of software such as server software, desktop OS, functional software like Payroll, system protection software like Anti-Virus, etc. Installing and configuring some of these pieces of software can be a daunting task. The software can crash during operations. Identify which software will be supported? What kind of support will be provided, e.g., will there be any support for installation and configuration or upgrades? HOME USERS: Under flexible working arrangements, many users might be working with company equipment from their homes. Will they be supported? The next important issue is how the support will be provided. HOW: Typically, support is provided over the telephone first, assessing the the extent of the problem, where possible guiding the user to rectify the problem by themselves. If this proves unsatisfactory, remote support by accessing the clients system from the support company's system may be attempted. To enable such remote support, the support company might install a VPN connection or remote desktop support client. If this also proves insufficient, a site visit may be needed. Understand exactly how a support request will be handled, and how the service level will be escalated to a higher level. WHEN: Response times can differ with different kinds of problems. Server problems will need to be attended without delay. How much delay is provided in the contract? Desktop problems can afford some delay. Don't insist on expensively short response times for these. IT support contracts will typically also contain certain obligations on your part. Some major obligations are listed below. Check that you have made arrangements to meet all such obligations. Designating a specified person as the person responsible for the preliminary fault identification and troubleshooting. This person will be the main contact person with the IT support company. Try not to make system changes without prior consent of the support company Doing regular housekeeping activities like backups, testing the backups, and so on (check who is responsible for these tasks and who is responsible for data recovery should the need arise). Paying bills as agreed in the contracts There will also be certain exclusions from the scope of support. Pre-existing faults and support for functional software such as accounting are examples of typical exclusions. Finally, there will typically be a clause on how to resolve disputes.

IT Spending: Educate Your Clients on Smart Purchases

Often, clients will ask you for advice on their IT spending plans. In this article, you'll learn some ideas to help your clients plan their IT spending. Suggest Your Clients Upgrade Their Machines Your clients also could earmark the budget surpluses for upgrading and replacing PCs more regularly. Because entry-level PCs are often one-half to two-thirds less expensive than top-of-the-line models, they’ll still be way ahead of the game. Just don’t forget to factor in a few hours of configuration time for each PC upgrade (yet another value-added service your company can provide), from an older to a newer PC. IT Spending Requires an Investment Mindset Also, whenever possible frame your client discussions in terms of "investments", as opposed to "purchases" or "expenses". Get your clients thinking about how planned PC hardware purchases should provide a positive return on investment (ROI). Don’t let your clients fall into the trap of thinking of PCs as office equipment. Take time to explain to your clients how PC-related assets have a much greater impact on the success or failure of their business than a fax machine, photocopy machine, filing cabinet or water cooler. Educate Your Clients about the ROI on IT Spending Be sure to impart how technology investments can make or break a small business. So, before your clients contemplate any major IT spending, discuss the expected cost and the benefits, as well as how they’ll measure these benefits. Copyright MMI-MMVI, Computer Consulting 101. IT Specialists: Branding Your Company

As IT specialists, a big way to differentiate yourself is to make sure that you're branding your company. Focus on selling your company name with its new industry twist. In this article, you'll learn why branding your company is so important for IT specialists. Don't go in flashing the certifications and vendor logos because that reduces you to a commodity. Sure, they can be part of your background information and something you can talk about, but don't lead with that-you are IT specialists. Concentrate on marketing and selling YOUR brand and the unique industry-specific value that your firm brings to the table. Filling Unfulfilled Needs Another great way to differentiate yourself is to find an underserved local niche and dominate it. How do you find these local niches and dominate them? It's a matter of just asking around. Where to Find Your Industry Twist When you're out at chamber meetings or the Rotary, talking to prospects, or going to B2B expos, look around for a big problem that's going unfulfilled. All of a sudden, a light bulb will go off one day and you say wow, I can't believe no one thought of that first! So if you can think of a solution and there are enough people in the area who need it, it's a really easy way to differentiate yourself as IT specialists. IT Specialists: You and Your Clients May Not Agree on Problems Be sure, however, that you're not selling solutions to problems that people don't think they have. Do you really want to talk someone into data security if they don't understand why data security is important? That is not to say that you shouldn't spend some time educating your prospects and your future clients about IT security. But if you're there for a half hour and they just don't seem to get it, or they're really stubborn, or they're just throwing up all these kinds of barriers, don't you think that there's someone down the street, or someone else that you ought to be talking to who does get it? Don't try to sell solutions to problems that people don't think they have. IT Specialists: Know Your Competition Make sure you also know your local competition reasonably well. Look around; study the four or five big competitors of yours. It's as simple as looking at their Web sites and brochures to see what other competitors are doing. Figure out if they all look the same, then you have a pretty good idea of what you need to do differently as an IT specialist. Copyright MMI-MMVI, Computer Consultants Secrets. IT Specialist: Why Narrow It Down?

If you're trying to grow your business, why would you turn away potential clients? In this article, you'll learn that as an IT specialist, your marketing efforts are less about turning away other clients and instead about finding if you have enough prospects to market to. If you know that your best clients are small accounting offices, do a quick search to find out how many small accounting offices there are in one hour radius of where you're located. If you don't know where to easily get your hands on that data, either contact one of that industry's leading trade groups, or talk with a mailing list broker. IT Specialists Can Market to a Niche Marketing to a niche is so much easier, too. You will know exactly which trade publications to advertise in. Don't spend a lot of your time and money putting generic ads into the newspaper, radio or the phone book. You are an IT specialist, so concentrate your marketing efforts directly into your niche. Once you develop expertise, as an IT specialist, all of a sudden you're worth even more to those potential clients. Your marketing message will resonate with the person that's picking up the phone, that's looking at your long copy sales letter, that's looking at your postcard, or that you want to get to attend one of your seminars. Don't Try To Speak to the Masses Don't try to come up with a message that resonates with everyone. If you do, you're going to end up competing on price. You're going to end up being a commodity just as if prospects opened up the phone directory and they called 30 companies looking for the dirt-cheap, lowest price. Put Your Name Where Your Clients Will See It If there's a newsletter or a magazine that these prospects all read from the local association, think about putting a targeted ad in there, or writing an article, or becoming active in that organization by volunteering or speaking at that group's events. In each of these instances, be sure to at least mention how your company provides great IT solutions for that particular niche or industry. The Bottom Line on Being an IT Specialist There are many different ways to penetrate the circle, but the key thing is to identify something that you enjoy doing and that's lucrative enough that it's worth trying to get more clients just like that. This simple targeted marketing strategy works for IT specialists across most different industries. Finding a niche is really important. Otherwise, you're going to look just like everyone else. IT Specialist: Replicating Your Client Successes

Often, the best way to be unique as an IT specialist is to narrow down your industry focus. Though it may sound like a daunting task, this article will show you how it can be quite simple. "Model" Your Best Clients Find more clients that are just like your current best clients. To do this, take your active client list and put it into a Microsoft Excel worksheet so it is in columns. In the first column, enter the client name. In the next column, have their revenue for the last 12 months. Then, divide by 12 to determine the monthly income and figure out who your most valuable customers are. This exercise is important because you can evaluate: o Customer service… who should get THE best services? o Retention… who's REALLY worth holding onto? o Profitability… who's REALLY paying the bills? Categorize Your Clients Now, look among your best, most active clients and customers. Figure out who falls into that (a) micro category where they have fewer than 10 systems, (b) who falls into that sweet spot of anywhere from 10 to 50 PCs, and (c) then who's very large to the point that you may not be able to service them adequately without adding a lot of high-level technical staff. From this exercise, you can find more clients that are just like those where you have the strongest expertise. Look at your list and see what makes your biggest and your best clients similar. Now you can become an IT specialist in that field. For example, are they accountants? Are they doctors? Maybe they're office managers; maybe they're controllers, lawyers, small manufacturers, or restaurants. Identify who they are and what they look like because you'll want to find more of them. Narrow Your Industry Focus Narrowing down your industry focus will immediately make you stand out as an industry expert. It doesn't really matter what the industry is. For example, if it's dental offices, that's fine. You can be an IT specialist focusing exclusively on dental offices or you could even expand it to other medical offices. Evaluate Your Own Professional Background Your own industry expertise could also be a really good springboard. That way, when you present your case to prospects, you will have the benefit of knowing about their field of business. That will be a huge reassurance for prospects. These small businesses are much more likely to pick your firm over someone who is direct mailing a generalized piece with no industry specialization. The Bottom Line on Being an IT Specialist Narrow down what industry your current clients fall into and where your own professional background comes from to form your niche as an IT specialist. It will make your marketing and sales efforts easier. Copyright Notice: Copyright MMI-MMVI, PC Support Tips .com. IT Specialist: Better Than a Generalist

Now how do you become an IT specialist, when to provide virtual IT you need to be a generalist? As an IT specialist, you will still need to provide a lot of different services. You may be: · network design · helping clients with procurement · managing relations · dealing with the phone companies, the Web hosts and the Internet access ISPs · deciding what to buy and inspecting it when it comes in · doing the configuration, testing, integration, customization, training, and troubleshooting. You're doing everything. So yes, that is being a generalist. But there's nothing that says that you want to be a generalist for everyone under the sun. As an IT specialist, you will find your marketing efforts easier. Be Choosy With Your Clients You should be all things, to some of the people by providing the soup-to-nuts complete solution. You provide true virtual IT, one-stop shopping… the buck stops here. You take full accountability of everything that your clients need, but limit the scope of the kind of clients that you go after. Take Real Estate, for Example If you're specializing in real estate, you've probably done a lot of work with commercial real estate firms and you're one of the top IT consulting firms in this niche. You can have the testimonials and references to show that you have indeed done work for these firms. So you're coming across as an industry IT specialist. Specializing Doesn't Require Extensive Experience Finding a niche could be as easy as having one or two clients that you've been working with for a year or two and you happen to have gotten involved in migrating an older DOS industry application to a 32-bit, or to a Web-based application. Over an extended period of time, you get to know the line of business applications. Often, that's a big differentiator between you and anyone else that they could conceivably call. The Bottom Line on Being an IT Specialist So the point: it doesn't take that much industry experience to position yourself as an IT specialist within that industry. But that specialization will make an enormous difference in your marketing results. Copyright Notice: Copyright MMI-MMVI, Computer Consulting 101 Blog. IT Service Contracts: Qualifying Clients

Some clients are simply not the right type for IT service contracts. In this article, you'll learn how to determine if they are interested in these agreements. Prepare to Screen Your Candidates When you are preparing for the sales call, be sure that you ask enough questions to figure out whether they’re a good candidate for IT service contracts. If you don’t think that they have the mindset of wanting to work with someone for the long-term, if you don’t think they have the mindset of looking for that trust and that relationship, then they will not be good candidates for IT service contracts IT Service Contracts Sell Peace of Mind You’re basically selling them an insurance policy. 85 percent of the time when you’re going in there, it’s not for emergencies. It’s for upgrades; it’s for maintenance; it’s for taking care of keeping the virus protection up to date; it’s for getting a new laptop up on the LAN; it’s for making an Outlook talk with their PDA. The 15 or 20 percent of the time when there’s an emergency, though, they really want to know that you’re going to be there. You need to make sure that the people that you’re talking to for prospects and going out and courting future clients buy into that whole idea, that they need an insurance policy; they need the peace of mind; they need to know that when it hits the fan that they’re going to have someone that they can scream for and that you’re going to be there to take care of their problems; that they can trust you. Don't Waste Your Time on Poor Candidates If you’re really looking to dramatically revamp your business and move in the direction of IT service contracts, think long and hard about whether you’d even want to go out on a sales call for someone that you don’t think would be receptive to this arrangement. IT Service Agreements: Living Up to Your Promises

If you are new to the service model, you may be concerned about your ability to live up to your IT service agreements. Let’s assume that you have eight clients who will book $165,000 in yearly revenue. The greatest fear for many new consultants is getting significant IT service agreements and not being able to support their clients in the short-term. Build Confidence by Planning Ahead The best way to handle this is to take stock of what you can do today. Make an inventory skills list. Look at what your competitors are doing and figure out where the gaps are. Figure out which of your services would be useful to a small business with a real LAN, with a real network. Figure out what some of your competitors are offering in terms of services and solutions and make a plan of attack for working on those deficiencies. Then, utilize them in your IT service agreements. How Important are Certifications? The big thing to keep in mind with most of these small businesses are that, unlike big IT shops, they’re usually a couple of years behind the curve. That means it’s no big deal if your technicians don't have skills on the brand new software versions--your clients probably don't have them either. . If you’re looking for a baseline qualification, having technicians that have a basic MCP, the Microsoft Certified Professional, will be useful regardless of whether they’re certified on a desktop operating system or a server operating system. For most of the small businesses in the sweet spot, they don’t care. They really can’t differentiate between advanced and entry-level certifications. IT Service Agreements: Identify Your Terms

IT service agreements require advance planning to inspire confidence in your customers. You need to know what benefits and prices you will offer to your customers ahead of time. This will be your compelling case for why your future clients need to be on IT service agreements. Make a Rate Card A rate card is a simple one-page document that shows your typical prices versus your service agreement prices. This is your marketing summary of the benefits you’re providing. Brainstorm a list of at least half a dozen compelling benefits for why someone should sign IT service agreements with you as opposed to paying by the hour. The essential thing here is to make sure that you know what you’re doing with this before you go out on the sales call. Otherwise you'll be screaming out that you’re an amateur. For your smaller clients, you may want to have IT service agreements that are priced at a couple hundred dollars a month. For your sweet spot clients, $800 to $1,000 seems to work really well. For your bigger clients, it may be a $2,500 a month type of deal. Consider Your Travelling Distance If you’re used to servicing people within a 10 or 15-mile radius, you may have to extend your umbrella a little bit. Most of your competitors will easily go 45 minutes to an hour out and then it’s just up to you to figure out an economical way to do it. Some of them will charge for travel time; a VAN charge or a fixed charge for showing up. This compensates for some travel time and transportation expenses. Most of them will enforce some kind of minimum. Minimums range from as little as one hour to as much as a half-day minimum. IT Service Agreements for Small Businesses are Key You would literally have to have a couple hundred home networking customers to equal what you could get with 10 or 15 solid small business accounts. And those home networking customers don’t want to hear that you can’t give them fabulous service because they only spent $300 with you this year. They’re going to expect the sun, the moon, the earth and the stars just as if they were spending $300 a week with you. As a result, it’s a heck of a lot easier to find more concentrated buyers that need to see you a couple times a month. With these customers, you can afford to give that kind of response time. It’s Your CD Printing Guide!

Your CD is 1.2 mm thick disc of almost pure polycarbonate plastic, approximately weighing 16 grams. Often, your CDs carry aluminum layers that make their reflective surfaces, which are protected by lacquer films. Gold is but rarely used for data longevity, such as in some limited-edition audiophile CDs. Your CDs normally have directly printed lacquer films, not adhesive labels. The process of directly printing the lacquer films on CDs is often termed as cd printing. Usually, the lacquer films on CDs have ability to absorb ink and are printable. Normally, the methods used for cd printing are – INKJET PRINTING, THERMAL TRANSFER PRINTING, SCREEN-PRINTING, and OFFSET PRINTING. INKJET cd printing uses CMYK Inkjet printers to put tiny droplets of liquid ink onto specially-coated CD surfaces. The CMYK Inkjet printers are usually automated robotic systems that load and deposit CDs automatically after some initial manual setups. The inkjet cd printing results are amazing in high resolution and vibrant colors. Inkjet cd printing is ideal for small runs with photographic quality print, or when you desperately need fast results. However, in Inkjet cd printing, your “per unit prices” do not drop, and thus you may find inkjet cd printing uneconomical as compared to silkscreen cd printing, or lithographic cd printing. THERMAL TRANSFER cd printing is the process based on melting a coating of colored ribbon onto the surfaces of your CDs. The thermal transfer printers contain two ribbons – one containing panels of cyan, magenta, yellow and black, and each color is printed individually onto the second ribbon- the transfer ribbon. This cd printing is cost effective for small runs and offers you superb finishing superior even to lithographic cd printing. Offering quick and excellent results, the thermal transfer cd printing has grown very popular for small runs. SCREEN cd printing a printmaking technique that creates a sharp-edged image using a stencil. SCREEN printing is also known as silkscreening, or serigraphy. The screen cd printing is a cost-effective method for larger quantities of CDs. It is most effective with simple designs of few colors. The screen cd printing offers fine finishing results in vivid colors. Your “per unit” cost becomes pretty frugal, when you order over 1000 units in screen cd printing. OFFSET cd printing is a widely used cd printing technique where the inked image is transferred (or "offset") from a plate to a rubber blanket, then to the printing surface. It is often called Lithographic (Offset) cd printing, when used in combination with the lithographic process. This cd printing has become the most common high-volume commercial printing technique nowadays. This cd printing technique offers fine results in highly detailed photographic images. This is the perfect option if you need upwards of 1,000 units based on highly detailed artwork, producing a superior finish to silkscreen printing at a relatively comparable price. You can choose your cd printing and cd printing services, according to your need and requirement. You may find your cd printing service at your local area, or you may hire your cd printing service online. Of course, you can find lots of cd printing services online, but you should choose the most favorable one.

IT Marketing: Finding Prospect Lists

After you write your long sales letter, you need to know who to send it to. In this article, you'll learn where to find an advertising list and trade organization listings to help with your IT marketing efforts. Advertising Lists For list selection, you have many choices. If you're looking for recommendations, especially in the U.S., it's really simple. You have list compiler companies like Zap Data (), and InfoUSA (). For your IT marketing, they're a good place to start. Tip: For renting mailing lists outside the U.S., start looking at: · Accountable List Brokers - in Australia · List Angels - in the United Kingdom · InfoUSA also has Canadian lists To go deeper, look at the local chambers and the industry trade groups where you can skim out some additional contact information for your IT marketing list. And certainly don't overlook your local newspapers and business journals for additional leads. Getting Involved in Trade Organizations Over time, you will build up your IT marketing client list and end up with two clients that are, for example, dentists. You have experience in installing small LANs and setting up networks and all the X-ray, digital imaging software and all the patient chart management. You know exactly what to do with a dentist's office. So it makes sense to look for other prospects that are just like these dentists because it's a lot easier to sell to them. Hang out Where Your Clients Do The best way to reach those kinds of prospects is to look around for the trade groups that this particular occupation or industry would belong to. Go to their meetings and conferences, and take out a table in their local expos. Become active so you can be a panelist on something technology-related or write an article for one of their industry publications. The key here is to get referrals. Don't Over-do It Don't run out to join more than two or three industry organizations at a time because that can easily take up a big chunk of your week. Ease into this over the next couple of months and get reasonably active. Don't get to the point that it starts digging into your job like getting on the board of directors or anything thing like that. But you do need to go to the meetings. If you go a few times a year, you will start meeting enough people to make the word of mouth referral potentially significant. The Bottom Line on IT Marketing In IT marketing, finding your potential customers is paramount. To build your prospect list, buy or rent some advertising lists and go to the industry events of your customers. Become reasonably active in these organizations so you can build your referral business.

Most, or all of the systems will be sold with a Maintenance Contract covering routine maintenance and breakdown cover. The infrastructure equipment supporting an IT Equipment Room can be made up of some or all of the following: Standby Generator, UPS system, Electrical Switchgear and distribution, Fire Suppressant system, Air Conditioning, Building Monitoring System, Data Cabling, Building Services and general cleaning. The handling of the day-to-day administration of all of these maintenance contracts, placed with different suppliers, is time consuming and a distraction from the individual's role within their organisation. Contract renewals, maintenance visits and break down situations, for each supplier need to be arranged and supervised. Most site visits are usually outside of normal working hours. This is the reason that companies are increasingly outsourcing their IT Facility Management. A good contractor will be able to carry out all of the above on your organisations behalf. You should be given a 24/7 single point of contact for all of your maintenance and break down contracts. The outside contractor assumes responsibilities for existing contracts, or will be able to recommend a Service Provider from their database of approved suppliers. Take, for example the UPS system for the computers. The external IT facilities management contractor will help you specify the correct level of protection for your system Modern processors in computers are very vulnerable to voltage spikes in the mains power supply. The processor may even fail, through overheating if a properly regulated supply is not in place. People think that because they are paying for a 115v or 230v (UK) supply that that is what they get. No way. The quality and consistency of the electricity supply depends on the load and load variations being placed on the supply by local businesses. You can protect your computers and the systems that depend on them by fitting a Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) System. UPS systems range from a simple plug in device for a few dollars to complete standby generators for many thousands. The simple plug-in devices are a waste of time and money if your business computer crashes. These low cost "UPS" systems are really just basic mains filters that remove the worst of the voltage spikes. If you want any protection at all you need to consider a system that has sufficient battery power as a backup to allow you to close your system down manually if the power fails. The cost of UPS systems largely varies with the amount of backup battery power available.

IT Emergencies: How To Plan For Them

IT emergencies, IT-emergencies, IT emergency, IT-emergency In a perfect world, there should be no IT emergencies, but it doesn’t work that way. Handling IT emergencies are critical to maintaining your customer base and a great opportunity to acquire new business. You cannot afford to staff up to every peak, nor can you afford to fail to meet the needs of an existing client. Don't Overschedule Your Staff Generally, you want to schedule at about 75 percent capacity for technical people that don’t have sales responsibilities or management responsibilities. This leaves about 25 percent flexibility for non-billable projects, IT emergencies, and new business targets. There will be peaks that you cannot meet. Then it is all-hands-on-deck and the ability to do triage among customers as well as for a single customer becomes important. This is the time when standardizing pays off If you’re booking someone out in the field for a full day, schedule them eight to 11 in the morning and do the afternoon appointment from one to four. This leaves you some time. Explain IT Emergencies To Your Clients Also clients that you have long-term relationships with do understand when emergencies come up and will excuse a rescheduled maintenance appointment. After all, they want to know that you will respond to their IT emergencies too. If you need to call them and tell them that you’re stuck at a client emergency--the server’s down, lightening struck, or there was a fire or whatever-- most long-term clients are pretty understanding if you’re running an hour or two late. It really boils down to keeping the communications open, staying in contact with people, making best use of your resources and just don’t over schedule on the routine stuff. The Bottom Line about IT Emergencies The project work is a lot more predictable generally because you’re going to know the requirements a couple of weeks to a couple months ahead of time. Be sure to build some slack time into the schedule to accommodate IT emergencies. Copyright MMI-MMVI, Computer Consultants Secrets. IT Emergencies: Be Prepared

You want to be prepared for IT emergencies with checklists, the ability to access online resources, telephone support lines, and tool kits ready to go. Begin with matching your abilities to their basic needs. Find out what kind of hardware your customer has, what the operating system is, what applications are involved, and how is it impacting their business operationally and financially. Failure to assess the situation before you are on-site can quickly get you into quicksand. Make sure that your clients' most probable IT emergencies are things that you think you can fix... or things for which you can provide a quick workaround. IT Emergencies: Can You Fix It? For example, if they have a major problem with Linux and you don't have that kind of experience, emergencies and cleanups are NOT the place to start the learning curve. The more the problem impacts the company, the better the opportunity, IF you are prepared for it. At the same remember it is not possible to know everything. Preparing Your Company for IT Emergencies With a new client, there's a good chance that even if their hardware and their operating system, are familiar, that they may be using an oddball hub, switch, or router. If it is going to cost you more to learn how to fix this sort of item, it is better for you and the customer to replace it with something that you are comfortable supporting. You can get the customer up and running faster and you are building a common installed base, "cookie-cutter"-style, to make any future support burden easier. In this respect, it is simply the same approach you are working toward with your regular clients. You can provide better service in less time when you focus on one type of server, one backup software program, and one anti-virus solution... than having to keep up with all the upgrades and renewals, or replacements for a broad range of quickly changing products. Remember that in the customer's eyes, if you can handle taking care of the emergency priorities through triage and cleanup, they are going to be EXTREMELY receptive to anything else that you recommend. The Bottom Line on IT Emergencies IT emergencies are great opportunities for you to strengthen your long-term client relationships. Done right, you'll build incredible client loyalty. However, IT emergencies done wrong will just about ensure that you lose the client. Use the IT emergencies tips in this article to be better prepared. Copyright MMI-MMVI, Computer Consulting 101.
